Carl Maier and the CMC
Carl Maier & Cie (CMC)
In the second half of the 1950s, Carl Maier & Cie, CMC for short, moved into the “Hallen am Rhein” at Mühlenstrasse 26 as part of a business expansion. The Schaffhausen-based company, which manufactured electrical switchgear and fuse systems, was based on Fulachstrasse and utilised the central location of the “Hallen am Rhein” to expand production. With up to 1000 employees, CMC was an important employer in the city at the time.
ABB took over CMC’s business activities in 1992. Only the CMC properties, including the “Hallen am Rhein”, remained in the Carl Maier family.
The halls remained in operation until the mid-1990s, after which they were emptied by ABB and stood unused at first.
Carl Maier, founder of CMC
Carl Maier (1877-1952) is probably the most important industrial pioneer in Schaffhausen in the first half of the 20th century.
His intuition for the importance of the river brought him prosperity, which he also liked to show off: his motorboat on the Rhine proudly bore the registration number ‘SH 1’.
